Beverly Hills Orthodontist Zooms in on White Smiles

April 22, 2008— BEVERLY HILLS AND SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA — Perfectly aligned teeth are achieved through orthodontic procedures, but more patients are turning to teeth whitening after orthodontics to put the finishing touches on a megawatt smile.

Orthodontist Dr. Atoosa Nikaeen offers Zoom! whitening procedures in her Beverly Hills orthodontics practice after patients complete their orthodontic treatment.

Zoom! offers a chairside procedure done in the orthodontist’s office, and a take-home kit. It is one of the most popular teeth whitening procedures used by dental professionals today, according to www.dentalfind.com.

“When a patient has undergone months, sometimes even years, of orthodontic treatment, they want to show off their smiles once those braces are removed,” Nikaeen said. “Undergoing a teeth whitening procedure is a great way to showcase their new, improved smiles.”

Zoom Whitening- The Basics
Stains created from years of drinking coffee, colas, tea, and red wine are no match for the Zoom! whitening procedure. The Zoom! gel cuts through these stains, as well as those created by years of tobacco use.

Coffee, colas, red wine and tobacco products should not be consumed for 48 hours prior to undergoing the Zoom! treatment, Nikaeen said, adding that this helps ensure the best results.

The chairside procedure performed in Nikaeen’s office begins with a preparation to cover the patient’s lips and gums, leaving only the teeth exposed.

A dental professional or other Zoom! clinician then applies the proprietary Zoom! whitening gel, designed for use with the Zoom! light, according to the Zoom! official Web site. This low-heat light works with the hydrogen peroxide contained in the gel to penetrate the teeth. The gel attaches itself to stained molecules on the teeth, breaks up the molecules and reduces the discoloration by allowing oxygen to enter the tooth enamel.

During this time the patient can relax, or listen to music. The gel is applied for three 15-minute sessions, for a total treatment time of 45 minutes.

Nikaeen or a dental assistant administers a five-minute fluoride treatment after each session, she said. This is done to protect the teeth by creating a little “shield.” After the treatment series, patients can show off their ultrabright smiles.

The Zoom! Professional Take-Home Whitening Kit achieves similar results as the chairside, in-office procedure, and can be used by patients to do periodic touch-ups after having gone through the in-office procedure. The take-home system also can be used on its own without undergoing the in-office procedure. It is self-administered over the course of three nights, according to www.dentalfind.com. When used properly, the take-home system can whiten teeth by up to six shades.

Zoom! is designed for adults and can be used by almost anyone, Nikaeen said. However, treatment may not be as effective for some as it is for others. For example, a heavy smoker should not expect the same results as someone whose teeth aren’t stained from tobacco products.

“Even though the result may not be the same for everyone, Zoom! treatment will improve the shade of even the most stained teeth,” she said. “It might take more than one time of having the Zoom! procedure to get the desired result for heavily stained teeth.”

Nikaeen recommends consulting with a dental professional and having a thorough oral exam and shade assessment to determine whether the procedure will render the desired results.
