Beverly Hills Orthodontist Employs Self-Ligating Brackets to Create Beautiful Smiles in Less Time
March 17, 2008 – LOS ANGELES AND SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA – Researchers in the orthodontic field continue to develop new methods of aligning teeth, and much research focuses on achieving desired results in less treatment time while offering appliances that aren’t as noticeable as traditional metal braces.
When it comes to reducing the time patients spend wearing braces, self-ligating brackets are gaining popularity.
One product that Beverly Hills orthodontist Dr. Atoosa Nikaeen uses is the In-Ovation C self-ligating brackets produced by GAC International. An In-Ovation bracket is a twin bracket that uses a special built-in clip. The pressure from specific types of arch wires activates the clip and delivers specific torque to each tooth, resulting in fast, directed results, according to www.archwired.com.
The In-Ovation C is a translucent ceramic bracket that offers fast and comfortable treatment with the added benefit of high aesthetics. This enables patients to enjoy a cleaner appearance. Their smooth features and low profile makes them more comfortable, and since they require no elastic or metal ties, they create less irritation, are easier to clean and reduce opportunities for plaque build-up, Nikaeen said.
In-Ovation C is the world’s first ceramic bracket that allows orthodontists to treat patients efficiently and effectively with self-ligation and GAC’s unique Interactive™ control technology, according to the GAC Web site. (http://www.gacintl.com/products/in-ovation-c.cfm?cid=16). Interactive means that orthodontists can choose the exact level of control that is required for each treatment phase. Greater control means better, faster finishing.
These leading edge brackets are characterized by high translucency and rhodium-coated clips that provide superior aesthetics.
“With these brackets, people are more likely to notice a patient’s smile, rather than the appliances affixed to their teeth,” Nikaeen said.
In-Ovation brackets produce a lighter force that gently eases teeth into alignment. They reduce orthodontic visits by an average of 40 percent, and they reduce the time of each visit. Finally, the overall length of time required to treat a patient is decreased. A 2003 study reported in the Journal of Orthodontics showed that In-Ovation brackets reduce treatment time by four months on average.
The reduction in treatment time, coupled with the more natural appearance of In-Ovation C brackets, appears to be particularly important to adult patients, Nikaeen said. Today, more than 25-percent of all orthodontic patients are adults and the number of adult patients is up almost 60 percent from just 10 years ago, according to the American Association of Orthodontists in St. Louis, Mo.
“Because In-Ovation provides quick results, while requiring fewer appointments and less treatment time overall, more adults are inquiring about braces,” Nikaeen said.
Other In-Ovation Products
These self-ligating brackets come in other styles besides ceramic. In-Ovation R is a metal bracket that is smaller and has a lower profile than many other self-ligating brackets. Nikaeen uses these on a limited basis.
In-Ovation L MTM is an alternative to tray aligners for patients requiring six millimeters of movement or less. These self-ligating "quick clips" are invisible and work within a few months to produce an optimum smile.
