A healthy bite is defined as when the upper teeth meet in front of the lower teeth on both sides of the mouth. An abnormal bite, or malocclusion, is a misalignment of teeth and/or an incorrect meeting of the upper and lower teeth.
Many people have some sort of malocclusion, although the majority isn’t serious enough to require treatment. If you have a more severe malocclusion, orthodontic braces and/or surgery may be required to orthodontic and sometimes surgical treatment to correct the problem. Correction of malocclusion may reduce risk of tooth decay and help relieve excessive pressure on the temporomandibular joint. Orthodontic treatment also is used to align the teeth and create a better smile.
