Finally Had My Braces Removed. Why Do I Need to Wear a Retainer?

The excitement one feels upon having their braces removed is certainly understandable. After all, you have put a lot of time, effort, and expense into creating your new, beautifully straightened teeth. In order to maintain that smile for a lifetime, it is imperative to follow up with correct retainer usage, as directed by your orthodontist, which will ensure your teeth remain in their new perfect position.

A retainer is a plastic dental device (may include a metal wire) that is typically comfortable and easy to wear. Dr. Nikaeen’s patients often report soreness initially, which wanes as the wearer becomes more accustomed to the device. Most patients are asked to wear their retainers at night.

Equally important in your braces aftercare routine is impeccable oral hygiene. Regular tooth brushing and brushing of the retainer is imperative in order to prevent tooth staining and potential decay. It is also recommended that the retainer be soaked and disinfected weekly or daily, by placing the retainer in a mixture of warm water and a denture cleanser, such as Polident or Efferdent.

For each of her Los Angeles patients, Dr. Nikaeen designs a custom-made retainer to aid retaining your teeth in their final position. The retainer prevents any undesirable shifting of teeth.

Be sure to ask for our aftercare instructions to maximize the results of your treatment. Schedule an appointment by calling (310) 444-1113.
